Clean it out
Look under your kitchen and bathroom sinks, at the basement workbench, in the garage or garden shed – wherever you store cleaning products, home and vehicle maintenance items, or garden chemicals. If a product label says “danger,” “warning,” “poison,” or “caution,” the product contains ingredients that are flammable, poisonous, will burn the skin and eyes, or react violently with other chemicals. These items, if disposed of improperly, are a threat to our environment and health. Landfills, water and sewage treatment plants are incapable of processing these chemicals and the result is the eventual contamination of our groundwater and waterways, upon which everyone is dependent.
How Do I Handle Household Hazardous Waste In My Home?
- Read labels carefully before you make purchases so you can reduce the amount of hazardous material that you bring into your home.
- Choose non-toxic alternatives when possible. Select the least toxic products available and buy only the amount you need to use.
- Store all toxic products away from children and animals in safe, tight containers. Make sure they won't leak.
- Store away from extreme temperatures.
- Follow label directions and use only what is needed.
- NEVER mix products. Mixing products can cause explosive or poisonous chemical reactions.
- Always store products in their original container with the original label.
- Never eat, drink, or smoke when handling hazardous materials. Clean up properly after use.
How Do I Transport Household Hazardous Waste To HHW Collection Events & Locations?
- NEVER mix products. Mixing products can cause explosive or poisonous chemical reactions.
- Keep products in their original container with the original label.
- Secure products so they won't tip or leak.
- Keep products away from children and animals.
- Store products in the back end of the car, away from the passenger compartment.
- Stay in your vehicle during unloading.

CONSIDER ALTERNATIVES
The more you use safe alternatives, the less we spend on disposal of household hazardous waste (HHW.) The more HHW you dispose of, the less we save during these tough budgetary times. Choosing safer alternatives is the difference between money saved and money spent.
So, ask yourself, "Why unnecessarily buy something that is harmful and expensive to dispose of when you could choose an alternative that's safer and cheaper to manage?" You can help reduce the cost of this program by:
- Avoid purchasing hazardous household materials
- Give away what you cannot use
- Use safer alternatives
- Use up what you buy
